Closing the gaps in your laminate floors not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also prevents the accumulation of dust and debris. Fortunately, fixing these gaps is a straightforward process that requires only a few basic tools and a little time, often without the need to redo the entire flooring. This guide will walk you through closing end-of-floorboard gaps using a gap fixer tool or wood glue, as well as addressing longer, lengthwise gaps. Additionally, we'll provide valuable tips on preventing these gaps, helping you achieve and sustain a smooth and level floor.

1.Remove the protective strip from the adhesive face of a gap fixer.

Remove the plastic cover from the adhesive on the gap fixer, exposing the sticky surface beneath. This tacky area will grip the laminate plank as you manually push it back into place. In case you don't have a gap fixer, create one by attaching heavy-duty double-sided tape along the underside of a 6–12 inch (15–30 cm) 2x4 or another wooden block, aligning it with the block's length. Alternatively, if your gap fixer utilizes suction cups, position it correctly and secure it to the plank by pressing down on the tabs on both sides. Additionally, ensure the gap is clear of any debris by vacuuming it, eliminating obstructions that might impede the gap-closing process.

1.Position the block 1 in (2.5 cm) from the end of one of the displaced planks.

Choose the plank located on the side of the gap closest to the wall. Center the gap fixer along the width of the plank, ensuring it is well-positioned. Apply firm pressure with both hands on the top side to secure it firmly, preventing any slipping or shifting during the repair process. Refrain from removing the block unless absolutely necessary or until the entire process is completed, as doing so may compromise the grip of the adhesive pad.

2.Tap the end of the block away from the wall with a mallet to close the gap.

Once you successfully close one gap, it's common for another to emerge at the opposite end of the plank. Utilize the block and mallet to shift the planks towards the center of the floor until you reach the baseboard. When you reach the baseboard and lack space to strike the gap fixer directly, position a small pry bar at the end of the gap fixer and strike the protruding end of the bar to move the board away from the wall. Before the next use, if there's any dust or debris on the adhesive pad, wipe it off with a damp cloth. Alternatively, refresh the adhesive surface of your DIY gap fixer by adding a new layer of double-sided tape.Keep in mind that a small gap near the wall is normal to allow for floor expansion with changing weather. If desired, you can conceal this gap with floor trim for a polished finish.

3.Coat the bottom of the gap and edges of the planks with wood glue

Utilize a toothpick or cotton swab to apply wood glue along the bottom of the gap. Ensure thorough coverage on the squared edge of the plank within the gap, commonly referred to as the "tooth" where the planks join. Aim for an even application from one end to the other, and don't hesitate to use a bit more glue than necessary, as you can wipe away excess later.Work with precision and speed as wood glue tends to dry rapidly, making it challenging to rectify any mistakes once it sets. Opt for any clear or yellow wood glue, and consider investing in a high-strength adhesive to minimize the need for future repairs.Alternatively, you can use laminate gap filler or wood putty as substitutes to fill gaps in laminate flooring.

4.Push the separated planks together to close the gap.

To do this, use a gap fixer or strike the plank at an angle repeatedly with the palm of your hand. Or, wearing rubber-soled shoes, simply kick down on the plank in the direction of the gap, which may be enough to shift it.
